The Global Institute for Food Security (GIFS) at the University of Saskatchewan is pleased to invite you to an exciting and educational seminar about Engineering Biology (aka synthetic biology) and its huge scope and impact for agriculture and food.
Engineering Biology combines a suite of technologies in automation and miniaturization, biology and computation to rapidly scale up the design and production of new or improved products. GIFS is building Canada’s only engineering biology platform dedicated to agriculture and food – to enable the sectors provide more nutritious and sustainable crops and food products at scale.
Using proven technology, engineering biology has been applied in heath, medicine, manufacturing and various other fields. Through GIFS’ Engineering Biology Platform, researchers will be able to design and create the following products – at a scale well beyond manual methods.
- Reagents, natural products, proteins and peptides that are needed to make agriculture and food production more efficient.
- New crop protection and plant health products, new enzymes to improve efficiency of animal production and food processing and to reduce waste, new food ingredients and flavours.
GIFS invites you to hear from Dr. Joerg Bohlmann, Professor and Distinguished University Scholar at the University of British Columbia, as he shares strategies and learnings from several years working with engineering biology to help solve some of society’s greatest needs.
A member of GIFS’ International Scientific Advisory panel, Dr. Bohlmann has received numerous awards and distinctions for his research and leadership.
Also speaking will be Dr. Benjamin Scott, Engineering Biology Platform Lead at the Global Institute for Food Security, who will discuss the incredible scale of research and product development that will be enabled by Canada’s only engineering biology platform dedicated to agriculture and food.
