Andrea Johnston and Jim Wispinski have joind the Board of Directors at the Global Institute for Food Security.
The Global Institute for Food Security (GIFS) at the University of Saskatchewan (USask) has announced the appointment of Andrea Johnston and Jim Wispinski to its Board of Directors.
The appointments take effect immediately.
“On behalf of the Board and our entire team, I’m pleased to welcome Andrea Johnston and Jim Wispinski to the Global Institute for Food Security,” said Alanna Koch, Board Chair.
“GIFS is fortunate to have a Board of Directors comprised of accomplished leaders with rich expertise and a diverse skill set across industry, government, and academia. As we expand our reach and impact, Andrea and Jim’s expertise in agriculture and food innovation, both in Canada and internationally, will be invaluable to GIFS’ team and mission.”
Johnston is the former Assistant Deputy Minister for Innovation Canada at Innovation, Science, and Economic Development. She previously served as a senior executive at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and is now an executive advisor to several organizations, including Mitacs and NorthGuide.

Wispinski is an experienced executive who served in multiple leadership roles with Corteva and its predecessor organizations. He held Vice President positions in Strategic Initiatives, Crop Protection Global Portfolios and Cereal Herbicides, and served as President of Dow AgroSciences Canada.

As GIFS welcomes Johnston and Wispinski to its Board, it also thanks two outgoing members, Dr. Sara Boettiger and Timothy Hawryluk, Q.C., for their contributions to the institute and its mission to advance innovative solutions for Canada’s agriculture and food sectors.
“The past few years have been transformational for GIFS as we established new technology platforms and initiatives, including the FCC Breeding Acceleration Program, that bring new capabilities to our partners and ecosystem,” said Koch.
“I want to thank our outgoing Directors, Sara and Tim, for their valuable contributions to GIFS through this period, which has positioned the institute to accelerate innovation and impact for stakeholders across the agriculture and food sector.”
