Plant Improvement

Our Plant Improvement Program, the Plant Phenotyping and Imaging Research Centre (P2IRC), is a digital agriculture research centre developing innovative tools to accelerate and transform crop breeding and food production.

Global food security is one of the 21st century’s biggest challenges as the world population grows. There is the need to increase annual food production by 70% by 2050.

To address this: the Plant Phenotyping and Imaging Research Centre (P2IRC), managed by GIFS and hosted at the University of Saskatchewan, develops innovative tools to accelerate and transform crop breeding and food production. Developed technologies and expertise will elevate Canada’s position as a global powerhouse in agricultural research. P2IRC advances in field and aerial sensors, satellite imaging, robotics and big data analytics will be leveraged for commercial opportunities.
