Steven Webb (PhD), chief executive officer of the Global Institute for Food Security (GIFS) at the University of Saskatchewan (USask) is staying on in his leadership role at the institute. The update, provided by GIFS’ Board of Directors, followed an October announcement of Webb’s resignation for family reasons.
“One thing we’ve learned during the covid-19 pandemic is that family is important, and like many organizations across the globe, we have explored alternative work arrangements to help GIFS keep the momentum it has gained over the past two years,” said Chair of GIFS’ Board of Directors Alanna Koch.
“As a Board, we have been able to provide some flexibility and we are thrilled that Steve will be staying on at GIFS while also being able to give needed attention to pressing family situations. His visionary leadership, keen insight into the agriculture and food sector and ecosystem, plus his industry experience will continue to help steer GIFS in its role of working with partners to deliver Saskatchewan-led sustainable solutions for global food security.”
Webb joined GIFS in July 2019, following a successful career leading research and development in the agriculture industry. In his time at the public-private partnership that was founded in 2012 by the Government of Saskatchewan, Nutrien and USask, he has led the launch of its new strategic plan for its second phase of growth, including a new vision of a world where everyone has access to safe and nutritious food. The institute is bringing this vision to life through its mission to work with partners to discover, develop and deliver innovative solutions for the production of globally sustainable food.
“I truly appreciate the Board’s amazing support and flexibility that has provided the opportunity for me to stay on at GIFS, while also being able to address personal situations that developed since the onset of the pandemic,” said Webb.
“My resignation earlier on was not an easy decision, but thanks to the Board’s understanding, we were able to work out an arrangement where I can continue in my role at GIFS, working with our excellent team to build on the foundation we have laid these past two years.”
After a short period of personal leave, Webb will return to GIFS in February 2022 to continue in his role as executive director and chief executive officer.
